15 Songs to Describe the Life of a Certified Athletic Trainer

As a former collegiate athlete and wife of a Certified Athletic Trainer, I have been blown away by the sports medicine profession. Certified Athletic trainers are the first ones to arrive and the last ones to leave. They work normal office hours and attend their sports team’s practices and games on top of it.

Aside from the long hours and frequent travel, they are strong communicators, selfless helpers, and smart resources.

They are a sports team’s health care professional. They do it all—injury prevention, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, and rehabilitation for injuries and medical conditions. They’re with the athlete from initial injury all the way to return to play following surgery or rehab.

In honor of athletic training month, I’ve put together a list of 15 songs that describe the life of a Certified Athletic Trainer.

1.”On the Road Again” – Willie Nelson

It’s no secret Certified Athletic Trainers travel and travel often.

2. “You’ve Got A Friend In Me” – Randy Newman

Not only do they keep athletes physically healthy, but mentally and emotionally healthy. Athletes come to them with all of their problems—on and off the court.

3. “I Feel Good” – James Brown

What athletes say after treatment.

4. “I’ll Be There For You” – The Rembrandts

They’ll be there for you when the rain starts to pour and they’ll be there for you like they were before. *clap clap clap clap*

5. “Taking Care of Business” – Bachman-Turner Overdrive

Whether they’re performing CPR or taping an ankle, they’re just doing their job.

6. “Wind Beneath My Wings” – Bette Midler

When you’re down on the field, your knee took a nasty twist, the Certified Athletic Trainer rushes out, picks you up and carries you off the field, cue this song:

“Did you ever know that you’re my hero,
And everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
For you are the wind beneath my wings.”

7. “Take It Easy” – Eagles

Sometimes the best thing a Certified Athletic Trainer can tell you is to take it easy. Rest is the best medicine.

8. “I’ll Stand By You” – The Pretenders

They have your back. Coach might think one thing, your parents might think another, but the Certified Athletic Trainer stands by you, with your best interest in mind.

9. “Home” – Daughtry

“Well, I’m going home, back to the place where I belong
And where your love has always been enough for me
I’m not running from, no, I think you got me all wrong
I don’t regret this life I chose for me
But these places and these faces are getting old
So I’m going home, well I’m going home”

Certified Athletic Trainers travel a lot. It can be exciting, but after a while they just want to be home.

10. “Work Hard Play Hard” – Wiz Khalifa

They work hard so athletes can play hard.

11. “Lean On Me” – Bill Withers

“Lean on me, when you’re not strong. And I’ll be your friend. I’ll help you carry on.”

12. “Show Must Go On” – Queen

When one of your starting five hops off the court with a hurting ankle, the show must go on. And that’s when the Certified Athletic Trainer evaluates and treats the athlete so they can return to play.

13. “Shake It Off” – Taylor Swift

The Certified Athletic Trainer can help differentiate between aches and pains and an injury.

14. “It’s Five O’ Clock Somewhere” – Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett

“Pour me somethin’ tall an’ strong,
Make it a “Hurricane” before I go insane.
It’s only half-past twelve but I don’t care.
It’s five o’clock somewhere.”

Sometimes the athletes just drive them nuts, but Certified Athletic Trainers still love their jobs.

15. “Ridin” – Chamillionaire

“They see me rollin’ [the coolers] They hatin’
Patrollin’ they try to catch me ridin’ [the golf carts] dirty”
